I was in Hendo last year.

The food was alright (some nights it would be quite good, other nights worryingly dubious), but it'll fill a hole.

The rooms are fair size in comparison to some of the other residences (most of the East Wing ones are quite nicely sized actually...one of the better wings).

The trek into town isnt that bad at all. Most people get the bus, which is a 10 min walk to the busstop, and then a 10-40 minute bus trip, depending on the time of the day. About a third of the way through the year I started walking in, which takes about 40mins and isnt too bad a walk, and saves the bus fares. (BTW a late nite taxi costs around 8-10 pounds, so that isnt too bad, and the buses run past 11 at weekends).

Could be worse...

Don't let the distance put you off!! I was at Henderson Hall a few years ago and I really enjoyed it, it's not a million miles away and is perfectly accessible on foot or by bus. The food is supposed to be much better than at Castle Leazes and you end up knowing/recognising most people unlike at Leazes so this might make up for the distance issue.

I'm also going to Henderson Hall but as self-catered student......apparently the kitchens are shared between 18 people - is this true? And for the toilets as well?

Nooo...someones been lying, they're between 6-8 in the self-catered part of Hendo. In the catered section they're between about 18-20. Not that the kitchens are fantastic or anything...

Cheers for all the info!

40mins walk is the but doesn't sound as if it's the end of the world either....

For the bus if it takes 10mins to the bus stop then does that mean it still take like half hour to get to the uni?

I got room 265 in the East Wing...any clue if I would be able to get wireless signal?

18-20 people in the catered section sounds fun...is it mixed or single gender?

The signal is really hitty missy...like on one side of the corridor you can get it...the other side cant. The 'near' side of east wing, facing towards the dining room is more likely to get it than the other. When you get there just try different places in your room, the window sills are good!

look on the thread "whats in the rooms" (link below). there are no pictures but you can find there a small description of our rooms. I hope you'll send me some pics when you arrive there, so I could prepare myself

Thanks for the link... and sure thing, I'll be sure to get you some pics of the rooms once I get there. Although, that does remind me to find my camera... wouldn't wanna forget it...

Just a word of warning for you guys, make sure you fill in the sheet they give you at the start of the year regarding the state of the room when you move in. Put down absolutely everything, the management at Henderson are nutorious for charging people frivillously (even the receptionist warned me about them when I moved in). I'm being haulled back to pay for a snapped curtain hook, so seriously...nothing is too small for them to pull you up at the end of the year! Just take 10 minutes out of your freshers fun to have a scout around.

Oh and appologies to whoever gets me room, its obviously unhabitable now...
