Analysing text, using structure and technique

What should I look for when analysing a text?

How would I use SQUID?

Any language techniques I could use too improve my wok?

I'd look for punctuation, sentence forms, if there's a change of focus (e.g. from the general to the specific), that kind of thing. I don't know what squid stands for, but assuming it's the basic structure that teachers give out, I'd make a point, then comment on what the structure/technique is (can't really quote here, unless it's a writing technique), then suggest what that means, and why that is good from the author's point of view (whether he wants to create tension/suspense etc.), and would then finish on what the effect on the audience is. don't forget to reference parts of the text outside the extract, you lose so many marks if you don't (i know from experience)...
