Emrys evans

Hi guys and gals, I'm going to Bangor Uni this year and was wondering what emrys evans is like as I have been allocated a hall there. How is it in general? Is there any freeview reception? how far is the closest internet location?

Also how much would it cost on average to live in halls for food etc?

As I use to live in Bangor(currently in Anglesey) I know my way around(including the pubs) but I have no idea how the uni works. Also if any one has any questions about and around Bangor in general(sports clubs, Martial arts clubs, activities, site seeing, etc feel free to post here or mail me and I'll do my best to help).

Thanks in advanced!

oh and btw Freshers '07!! WOOT!!

P.S. Please help ASAP as I need to send the form back soon

B40- something. Where are you gonna be at? Does any one know what it's like at th B40's? Does any one have any info on JMJ?

I'm in B004, so on the ground floor of Emrys Evans.

The only thing I've heard about JMJ is that it's the Welsh speaking hall.

JMJ is right up by the Uni, looks fairly average to me.

The best thing about Emrys Evans, there are loads and loads of people in one corridor, so you shouldn't have any problems making friends.

The worst thing, just about everything else haha.

It'll be fine there, no worries!

Cheers guys!! Does any one know if room B40X(forgot last digit) is high up? I would hate to be on ground floor! If you look at the link greeny11 posted it says that people from Emrys Evans may be moved into the new accommodation what is the reality if this happening?

I'm on the ground floor, you'll be on the 4th floor.
Ok Emrys (my old place). In my first year, I lived in two rooms, A410 and A214.

I am not going to pretty this up for you because you deserve to know what you about to move into. Simply put, Emrys is not called the "ghetto" for nothing!

The corridors in general have 18 rooms, I say in general because B4 has the wardens on it and they get doubles. There are 5 floors in each block, except for A which only has 4, as the whole building is built on a hill with B and C being at the bottom of the hill.

Your bathroom, will be one long room with 3 toilets, 9 sinks, 1 shower. There is another shower room per corridor and a bath room. The ones I saw and used looked like something out of a prison.

Your kitchen will be very tiny for 18. Fridge and freezer space varies per corridor. In A4, there were 2 larder fridges, 2 larder freezers. In A2, there were 2 larder fridges and a huge chest freezer. Fridge wise it was best to buddy up with a mate and share a shelf. Freezer wise, larder style do the same - chest freezer, bung all your items into bags, knot and leave neatly. Food nicking is very very common in Emrys (I once brought a box of 4 small pizzas, ate one, the next day they were gone). You will also get two sinks, two cookers, and enough cupboards for one each (get there early and get a bottom one as they are bigger.)

Moving on to your room. As you enter, your probably going to think "the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe" as you enter through the middle of your wardrobe. You get a huge double wardrobe one side and a unit with shelving on the other. At the top, you get loads more storage. I tended to keep a load of my food in the shelving bit.

Now admire your huge huge room whether it be painted white, blue, purple, yellow etc (your room is suppose to be white  ). While Emrys is a ghetto, you do get a lot of space. Your desk will span your entire window and room, with your heater being underneath it. You will get two book shelves on your wall and your bed and chairs (one desk one lounge.)

Now downside is you only get one socket vs the millions everyone else has so its extensions leads all the way. Also you have no aearial socket so you have to use a portable one, freeview is fine in A block. No internet but the 24 hour computer room is two minutes away. Also you are next to the coffee shop (ask for hot chocolate with marshmallows hmmmmm - if its still open) and the ffridd bar (closed down but will open during freshers.)

All in all, its not as bad as some make out. Sometimes I hated it, Sometimes I loved it. Bear in mind its only one year and then you can find your own place and its doesn't matter. Although personally, I did try to get my A214 back in my second year because I loved that room!

Good old Emrys Evans. What a dive, glad I didn't live there. Although... supposedly there was more of a community spirit there, kind of a shared "we got screwed, now let's make the most of it" thing.

Hey I was in B008 Emrys last year. This really was the best place to be in the whole of Bangor. I applied for en suite with internet and got this too, but there is no way that I regret it! It was amazing! Couldn't have had a better time!

The great thing is that there is 18 people on the corridor so you get into a big group of friends straight away. The left cooker is a bit slow in the kitchen, and me and a friend fitted the shower ourselves because the halls office dont give you a very good one. We left a coffee table and a few chairs there too so its more comfy than other kitchens. You'll really appreciate the common area to chill out in. Other halls dont have anywhere to chill out, only a small hospital style kitchen, but if you put the effort in emrys can be really homely. Plus its the warmest place to be in the winter! The heating has only 2 settings, hot and off.

Really dont worry about it it'll be great! Best year of my life!

If you want any more info get in touch.

Tom

PS They told us they were gonna move us last year too. The block isn't finished yet, its next to the gym and the windows aren't in yet. maybe they'll move you towards Xmas, but after emrys, the new blcks will seem really quiet and boring- only 5 people on a corridor?! lol.

Also, people who haven't lived in the halls freshers are asking about and a re slating it- get a clue! If you haven't lived there how the hell are you able to slag it off?!

Because you don't have to live there to visit them. Worst point.

Do you remember the guy who put spy cameras in the girls' showers? That was Emrys Evans, eh?

Was Llys Trefan or whatever it's called. Yeah, was interesting to say the least, absolutely dire personality.

I wonder if anyone on here knew him, that'd be a coincidence.
