    Hi, This is Q2 from page 20 (titled rate-determining step) of the Chemistry OCR A Textbook (2nd edition).

    The overall equation: 2NO+O2--->2NO2

    Rate equation: rate=k[NO2]^2

    What is the two-step mechanism for this reaction?

    You have written the question out incorrectly.

    The rate cannot depend on a product!

    My bad it was supposed to be rate=k[NO]^2

    Ive only got this so far:
    NO+NO-->NO2 + N
    O2+ N-----> NO2

    That'd get the marks for OCR A.

    A technique I suggest my students is to just combine everything together and create all of the products at the end:

    NO + NO -> N2O2
    N2O2 + O2 -> 2NO2
