    Two masses, m1 and m2, are connected by a spring of force constant k and are acted on by no other forces. They are oscillating about their centre of mass. Write down expressions for the potential and kinetic energies of the system and hence find the frequency of oscillation of the system.

    I have to answer this question, I'm not looking for a full model answer but more of a place to start. I cant picture in my head how the system would move - can I assume that the two masses won't move relative to each other, for example. I'm basically looking for a few sentences that roughly describes how the system will move.

    You can imagine the vibrations are either synchronous or asynchronous.
