I am in my first year at university and have been thinking of taking a leave of absence so I can consider whether I will stay on my course.
If I was to decide to leave my course and transfer to different university ready for September, where would I stand with student finance?
If I was to transfer universities would I have to reapply for a loan?
Also what would happen to the maintenance loan have received if I take a leave of absence?

If you leave mid year then SLC will ask for repayment of any "overpayment" of loans ASAP (so it makes sense to leave just before a payment is due to avoid there being any overpayment made).

Everyone is entitled to funding for the length of their course plus a "gift" year to cover restarting after a year or retaking a year. If you leave your current course and start again elsewhere in Sept 2017 then you'll use this gift year up. That means that your new course would be funding in full but if you decide to restart again or need to retake a year then you would not have funding for a second additional year (so if this is something you decide to do then make absolutely sure you're happy with the switch).
