University of Abertay is pretty good for this sort of thing. Since GTA was first created in Dundee along with Lemmings.

Companies tend to care more about your portfolio than things you get taught in a course for game design and programming. These are things you'll be working on more and honing on your own, it doesn't really matter about the course or university you go to for this.

What do you want to do after you finish your course? Make games for yourself or work for a big game company? If you just want to make games then you could be doing that right now, remember that university itself is all about self learning so when you start a course they'll just be giving you pointers about things they think you should know about game design and/or programming.

Are you already a good artist or programmer?

Why not contact game companies and speak to the people there and ask them what they did? You'll probably hear the same sort of thing. Get a degree but don't be too worried about the course or university for game design or programming because it matters far more about the individual. Build a portfolio.

Go to some hackathons and speak to the people there too, build something for consoles or the PC there, put that in your portfolio.

I recommend you take a maths with computer science course or just box standard comp sci course. Game development just requires you to learn the framework you're making the game in either it being unity 3D or pygame. Both of which you don't have to go to university to learn. You just need to be good at programming for low level games and be competent at maths especially Linear algebra and calculus to program high end games like GTA, FIFA, etc.

There are courses like Computing for Games, at Falmouth University, that apply computer science to games development in a very practical way. Such courses actively support the development of a portfolio while simultaneously helping students to develop the principles and fundamental knowledge otherwise found in a computer science degree.
