Hey ! youre right. it's because nitrogen and oxygen dont have polar bonds, so they wont vibrate once IR radiation is absorbed. IR Radiation is only absorbed where the polarity can be changed

does anyone know anything about electrical conductivity of titration mixtures. it's such a weird question i feel like it's not even in the syllabus.. it's a Jan 2010 multiple choice question..

Q10(d) during the titration barium hydroxide was added until it was present in excess. the electrical conductivity of the titration mixture:

    A. increased steadily
    B. decreased steadily
    C. increased then decreased
    D. decreased then increased

the correct answer was D . HELP ! Thanks and good luck!!

It's not that complicated actually. Basically, they're asking about the ion concentration of the solution. I just had a look at the paper and the reaction is between sulfuric acid and barium hydroxide, which gives a barium sulfate precipitate and liquid water as the products. Hence the products have no ions. So that means, as the barium hydroxide was added, the ion concentration increased (taking into account the sulfuric acid ions as well). But as these reacted, the concentration decreased (since the products had no ions). But they say that it was added in excess, so after the ion concentration decreased, it then increased as more barium hydroxide ions were added but remained in the solution as there was no more H2SO4 to react with. Hence the answer D: decreased and then increased. (The word electrical conductivity is used as a solution with ions can conduct electricity. It conducts more when more ions are present and conducts less when less ions are present). Hope you understood all that!
