What's the Mayor of Casterbridge?
If this is for personal discussion it might be better in Entertainment. If it's for school work then try Academic. The thread is being moved anyway

It's a good theme - imo the main theme of the novel! All Hardy's major works seem to be concerned primarily with fate and the effects of fate...

Aw Good!! Just making sure, I've been given a task to do with fate and The mayor of Casterbridge and personnally I think Henchard believes everything happens because of fate and I dont know whether Thomas Hardy believed in fate, as he is suppossed to sympathise with Henchard throughtout the novel, anybody else have any ideas on this?? Sorry to say to Hardy's fans out there but I did not like this book!! it was pretty boring!! and very bleak but its not whether I like it or not really it's how good i can compare it to wuthering Heights for my coursework!!

Also erm I don't even know how to PM or even how to look back at this thread i have to search for it!!I just can't seem to get the hang of this hahaha

Yeah, Hardy was a great believer in fate and destiny - he started out religious, but then was heavily influenced by his friend and mentor, and by Darwin and the ideas of evolution that were just being developed!

If you need any help, PM me and I'll help (if I can!)
