I've been hearing lately that History GCSE is required to get into many sixth form colleges, universities and jobs, although I didn't think I wanted to take it before hearing this. Is it really so crucial for the future? Should I take it so that I can apply to more schools and unis? Please help!!

Hi, I don't think it is such an important GCSEs to have that it will harm your future chances. Is it a subject you enjoy? As you move through the levels of education your GCSEs become less important so unieveristied will care more about your A-level subjects that your GCSE ones.

Those that say it is highly regarded may be talking in terms of the essays/heavy written emphasis the subject has, as universities like you having an essay based subject. However this doesn't mean it will be bad if you don't do it and lots of people don't do history but go on to university.

What subjects are you thinking of taking bedsides history?

I don't know who told you that - but in the nicest way possible, they're full of bs.

As a person who loves history - naturally I'd recommend it *however* - no, it is not "crucial." I don't think any GCSE choice is. (Maybe apart from English and Math... but that's core.) I can't imagine a university denying you for not doing History GCSE - that's beyond ridiculous, especially if you don't want to do it for a degree.

It's true that this is absolute BS!
