In all likelihood he was lent much more than the one million dollars he claimed. That's simply the number that came to him when he was trying to think of something small so the self-made billionaire image would be compromised as little as possible.

With the benefit of foresight, Trump was saying beforehand what many people were forced to say after. See here.

The area had become a dog's dinner with refugees streaming out and rampant ISIS.
But you've got people saying the World will be a more dangerous place with Trump!

He had at least $100m in loans from his father at different times, all of which he lost on bad deals. He later recovered his finances partly by heavy borrowing (some of it from extremely dodgy New York mob sources) and later he inherited his father's estate which was in the billions.
