I'm in year 12. There is a chance for me to take on a research placement at a local university during the summer, however this means I won't be able to go on our family holiday, I've said they can go without me as I believe this opportunity will help me get into university. However my dad is worried about me taking the train everyday which I don't understand. Thoughts on this?

I've been getting the train to school everyday for the past 6 years you'll be fine. Of course he'll worry but you just need to reassure him

Have they left you home alone before?

Your dad is being ridiculous, even if it is coming from a good place. You are legally old enough to leave home and live entirely by yourself. Maybe ask him what his specific concern is, and remind him that many sixteen year old travel alone daily.

No but I've said that a friend can stay with me if it makes him feel better

That's what I've tried to say, I think he just doesn't quite believe that I could be going to uni next year!

Has he told you what his specific concern is? Is it that you'll get lost/ take the wrong train or that something will happen to you involving other people?

I think it's to do with the getting lost but this will be a route I will travel everyday so I should be able to work it out

Maybe do a test-run of the journey, bring your dad along too to show him you know what to do. That'll settle him down if he's just worried about you getting lost
