Worth taking a car to Manchester?

I'll hopefully be coming DOWN SOUTH  to Manchester from Newcastle in September and am torn between whether to sell my car or take it with me.

I'll be living in fallowfield and can't see me needing to drive into the city and I doubt there's much worth driving out of the city for anyway.

Is anyone else taking a car or know someone that has done so?
Do they use it much?

Sounds crazy but I've renewed my Newcastle United season ticket so will be heading north as often as I can to see the games so it would be nice to have the car in that respect but if that was the only thing I used it for it might work out cheaper to use the train.

Cheers

Nah, it'd be crazy. Can't think where you'd drive. If you're just driving between fallowfield and the uni and into city centre, well I just can't think where you could possibly park, and more importantly the buses are every 6 seconds or something ridiculous.

Exactly plus will all the bus lanes it would take ages with all the traffic down Wilmslow Road. Even at Salford where the bus route isn't quite as good (every couple of minutes or so) people with cars are considered lazy.

If all you;re doing is traveling down to Wilsmlow Road then you can travel for as little as £2 a week. It will probably cost you more than to park at Manchester.

Well you've heard 2 people who said you shouldn't take it so i'll give you my point of view.

Last year I was a first year at Manchester and I didn't want to leave my car at home but I did for about 6 months so I could use it when I went home. I eventually decided to take my car to manchester and although I didn't use it much i'd never be without and besides its far less hassle to get home than using the train.

Fundamentally I agree with the previous 2 posters you don't *need* a car in manchester but I love having mind and wouldn't give it up for the world. It shall be joining me again in September.

Im taking mine!!! i only live 45 mins mins out of town so i will use it to go c ppl who are still at home and to get home when i need to! im not gonna be a taxi service and im not gonna use it to go to lectures or into the city cos the traffic is always bad along wilmslow rd and parkin isnt cheap! i think if u want it there then take it, u might not use it often but in case of emergency u have it!!!

I am not sure about the university halls, but in private accomation in Fallowfield/Rushulme I would watch you car as it may be subject to vandalism, My dad has had is car windows done about 3-4 times in the last 10 years and we live in a good area. Car vandalism is a probllem in Manchester unless you have a drive.

Like I said earlier I wouldn't be driving it into the city center I was just wondering if there was much possibility of me needeing to drive out of the city.

I run/walk anywhere if I have the choice anyway.

It still might be worth me taking it so I can travel back to Newcastle now and again.

Thanks for all the advice but I remain undecided..

I would only take it if your hall has cheap secure parking. You won't really need it all in Manchester though you may find it handy for places like the Trafford Centre or a short 30 minute drive to the beach.

Which halls are you going to be staying in?

I mainly use my car for driving home at weekends or for the occasional trip to ASDA or even the short trip to sainsburys wen i cant be arsed carrying bags.

Then you will be close the the Richmond Park car park which is secure and is £75 a year if i remember correctly.

To me, the idea of being a student with a car in Manchester, is a bit of an unnecessary luxuary. You are living on one of the bussiest bus routes I've ever seen... you will not use a car to get around Manchester.

Maybe a car would be useful for some people when they do go home, but how often do you intend on going home? Factor in parking costs and your insurance for a year, road tax, petrol etc and compare that to however many return train tickets you think you're going to be needing.

There are times when a car might be useful. But to me at least these instances were not worth the hassle of my car being there 24/7. For the record, I had my car at uni for the last week I was up in Manchester. I went home on the train after my exams, came back in the car to party hard for a week or so and enjoy the end of term atmoshpere, then loaded my car with my room contents (it's a big car!) and set off for home.

Kind of on this topic, if my boyfriend drives up to Manchester to come and see me at weekends, is there anywhere he would be able to park? On this uni campus map there seems to be four car parks (north west, north east, southeast and soutwest or something.) Can he park in one of those? If so, will it be expensive for say a 48 hr stay? Im living in Grosvenor halls.

Cool, cheers. If you could find out where it is that would be great  I threw the damned leaflet away.

But is it really that hard and that expensive to park in Manchester? What about the shoppers and day tourists etc? Where do they Park?

You can park in the city centre but the university is just outside it, and a good 20 minutes walk to the city centre car parks. They are also very expensive. Most shoppers/workers use public transport to get into the city centre as its much cheaper/quicker and easier.

The traffic in Manchester is often voted the worst outside London even worse than Birmingham so they need to everything they can to discourage car users.

For those that insist on using the car they will probably shop at the trafford centre where they can get conned in Dixons or Selfridges

Well you could use the Richmond Park car park. I think I'm right in saying you don't need to be a resident. Just pay £5ish for a weekend, plus a £10 refundable deposit for a keyfob, and you'll be able to park in a well lit, well CCTV'ed carpark with a rising kerb.

That sounds good, but surely my boyf wont be able to park there as he's got nothing to do with the uni? Unless I say his car is mine? It all sounds a bit scary. He could get the train but that would take 6 hours rather than 3.5. Hmmmm
