1 Day Before Resit & I Have The Flu

I had only 4 hours sleep last night, woke up with heavy congestion, runny nose, watrey eyes and Feeling a little weak. I've taken some Lemsip to help relief the cold.

I've been revising for my exams since last week as its mainly based on algorithms which I am confident this time in passing but from past experience I don't perform too well when im suffering from some sort of illness.

In my 2nd year of Uni I was disagnoised with uncontrolled Asthma. I had many tests done with me and had many appointments before they were finally able to diagnose me.
It effected allot of my exam but however with extenuating circumstances I was able to continue one of the exams into 3rd year (our Uni has a policy - if you do not pass you resit in the same term, you cant continue to your next year).

Anyhow having the flu means im wheezing a little, although its just flu at the moment ive seen what happens in the past and by day 2-4 I feel really aweful, weak and find it hard to concentrate.
I think its a bug or somthing as my mother has also got the flu today (same symptons).

Anyhow I was hoping to recap and learn 1 more algorithm today but so far I feel to sleepy/destracted to be able to.

What should I do if worse comes to worse?

Get to the doctor and get a medical note, and submit a form for mitigating circumstances. Speak to your tutor ;yes;

I don't have the strength to go Doctors, so how do I go about this?

Yeah, definitely have a go at the exam unless you really., really can't do it.

If you really, really have the flu (and not just a bad cold like people seem to think) I'm pretty sure you can get some mitigating circumstances, although I would still try to take the exam because your onset is very acute.

I did most of my GCSEs totally spaced out on medication due to some bizarre illness I got 2 days before my english paper. I did get mitigating circumstances for all of the exams I was ill for, but I made sure I still attended.

Could you call in a favour with a friend or parent to take you? some GPs do home visits if you ask.

I think its a really bad cold but it interfears with my Asmtha. I get more heavily congested which leads to short breath'/continuous cough and wheezing.
If I walk for a long time (5mins+) I get out of breath.
At the moment theres no one avaliable to take me to the docs and oncall isnt serious enough.
As in I have all the medications to make me better and the doctor at the hospital has told me previously I will get effected more then a regular person so be patient but explaining this to the Uni might be hard.

Can I take the exam and on the same day inform them about the situation and if equired then get a note from my doctor at the hospital?

Is it actually flu, or just a cold? When I had flu, I couldnt even move out of bed to the computer I was so unwell! If its just a cold it wont last long, just take some parocetamol and drink plenty.
My brother had tonsilitis when he was doing his GCSEs, and it was taken into consideration when marking - but he had a doctors note to verify it.

Woops I didnt see your post above! Couldnt you call your uni now and ask them what they think?

they say that they don't like to give mitigating circumstances retrospectively. call the uni and speak with them now.

hmmmm I went to sleep after my last reply as I was just so drained. I didn't call the Uni however I will take the exam. Im actually feeling worse then before for some strange reason but lets hope tommorow morning ive improved (even if its a little).

If you're too weak to actually go to the doctors, how can it not be serious enough to call them out? :s-smilie:

I hate keep going to Doctors. Last 2 years that all I did. Every 2 months go doctors and every month go Hospital. It ain't as serious as I mentioned I have been given the medication to deal with Asthma. However this morning (15mins ago) was the worst to come. I woke up short breath and that hasnt happened to me since over a year (whilst sleeping anyway).
Should I just go to the main office today and let them know before the exam or after?
Theres no time for a doctor and too be honest ive been in this situation many of times in the past (just not recently), so I know what they will do/say.

Mitigating circumstances require mitigating evidence. It's worth mentioning your illness, sure, but I can't see you getting special consideration with out a doctor's note. You wouldn't at my uni at least.

It doesn't matter that you know what they'll say, all you want from them is a note saying you're poorly.

Right well I can't go in to the doctors until 8am now and thats too late for me as I have to be at Uni by 9:45 latest (takes 1 hour by bus or 45mins by train). How do I go about this?
Do I go speak to my tutor first or after my exams (considering if I have time before the exam).

I think by not going yesterday you've rather forfeited your chance to get a note. You may however be able to go after your exam and submit evidence afterwards. At my uni, I don't know about resits, but you can submit evidence for the main exam period well into the summer, even after the end of term.

Certainly contact someone before the exam if you can to find out if you can submit evidence afterwards.

I don't know how your exam policies work, but if I went to the tutor in the morning and that was my only evidence, I wouldn't not get special consideration at all. But I cannot speak for your university, so by all means if you can drop into your tutors office for five minues before the exam, do. It may help.

EDIT: If by 'how do I go about this' you mean how do you go about seeing your GP... i have no idea. Every surgery works differently.

Relief - Its ok, I will go after my exam to the doctors. It states on the form of extenuating circumstances that the last day for submission is on the 7th (which is tommorow).
