Scabies

Hi,

One of my really close friends gave me scabies twice! Our friendship has never really recovered, as the second time they knew they had it and yet they let me sleep in some their bedding and wear some of their clothes (as mine were soaking wet). They didn't tell any one they had been in close contact with that they had it, nor did they want to. So i ended up having to tell my flat mates and family about the whole thing for their own saftey, while my friend who was to blame got away with the whole thing. My friends made a joke about it, was embrassing but i would rather make sure no one else had to go through the suffering.

Its a horrible thing to catch and i think i have a more serve reaction to it then most. Even after treatment you still itch for another three weeks or so, it does make your life misrible. I thought i was over the whole thing but.... last week i stayed at a friends house after a night out who was a v good friend of the person who initally gave it to me. Thing is i pulled someone (not slept with) but kissed/close with a randomer in a club. After the night out i slept in their bed and they slept in their sisters bed, 24 hours later (once you've had it your immnue system reacts pretty instantly to it, if you haven't you can be asympotomatic for 6 weeks) i began to feel really itcy... after another 24 hours the itching continued so i treated myself. It seems to have sorted the problem.

I'm not sure if its just me being parinoid, i can hardly bring up the subject with my friend either as i'm not sure if its them that i caught it off. I feel like its still ruining my life, i'm afraid to be close to people. Its prob just me being parnoid but i need to get over this and i don't know how. It does not help that the doctor told me that thier was a major out break at my university!

Thanks all:redface:

I'd punch her.

Really.
I personally would kick off if my friend had it and didnt tell me - that truly is NOT a truthful friend you have there.

Question - so once you get it, that's it? its in your immune system for good???

OP: try not to stress too much. Definately cant be easy for you but im sure it'll get better soon. Try to not get too paranoid. Talk to close family or friend who is able to understand your problem.

Hope that makes sense and helps.

Thanks for the supportive advice, i'm feeling fine now its either cos i nipped it in the bud by treating it so early or because it was all in my head/ a itchy raction to something else or washing powder. Yeah i barley see this friend now because of it all, they are a complete arse for putting their other friends at risk. I'm just worried now that i may catch again off one of our mutual friends. Hopefully i am just being paronoid.

In answer to your question, If you have caught it before your immune system reacts within a few hours, i.e. you begin feeling itchy. If you have never had scabies before your immune system does not react for around 4-6 weeks to the mites on your skin i.e. u don't start itching and are a symptomatic. You barley see adult mites with the naked eye, so a asymptomatic person can be unaware that they have scabies, which is why it is so easily spread.

With regards to my friend who gave it to me, i can only assume them and their partner kept giving it to each other or they didn't bother treating themselves properly.

I generally don't pull people in clubs and have just caught it through close contact with friends. It really does suck that its maybe think twice about hugging someone ect. People that find they have should really do the decent thing and tell close family/friends to treat themeselves to save both alot of suffering and itching.

It's not like cold sores where the virus can lie dormant for some time. Scabies is a parasitic infestation caused by the scabies mite that burrows into the skin and causes quite intense itching.

There's information about it here (expect to feel quite itchy whilst reading it though): http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/scabies/Pages/Introduction.aspx
