I'm getting my braces off in 3 days. I'm really excited because they've been on for 2 and a half years now, it's time for them to go! The thing is, my orthodontist says the appointment will only take 20 minutes. I don't think thats enough time to take off, clean up and fit a retainer? All the websites i've searched this on say at least 40 minutes so obviously i'm a bit confused. I'm worried they might leave me a week without a retainer because I have another appointment booked exactly a week after, and i'm terrified my teeth will go back to how they were in that time.

Does anyone know anything about how long it should take and what is going on with my teeny appointment time?

Well for mine they needed about 4 hours to actually make the retainer, so I had the 20 minute appointment to take them off and have moulds taken then came back later that day to collect the retainer/make sure it fit. That might be what they're planning on doing, why don't you call them and ask if you're not sure?

It took my orthodontist about 10 minutes to get mine off and do all the cleaning stuff. I got a retainer a week after I got my braces off and it didn't fit so they had to send off for another one so I went 2 weeks without a retainer and my teeth were absolutely fine. Don't worry about waiting a week, your teeth won't be able to move that much in such a short space of time. Your orthodontist knows what they're doing

I had mine taken off 3 weeks ago (just had braces on my top teeth) and the appointment only lasted around 25 minutes, with my orthodontist taking the braces off cleaning them and fitting a bonded retainer before making a mould for my removable retainers which I picked up the next week.

the orthodontist is a highly trained professional who has done this procedure hundreds, if not thousands of times. just let him/her/ze get on with it.
