I'm going to be going to university in September and I was wondering how I can meet new people. I'm a little bit socially awkward, but not to the point where i'm scared of going out etc and feel like people are judging me all the time (as I have read others have felt that way) - it's just I don't really know how to start a conversation. Once I get talking to someone, i'm fine.

    So, here are my questions:

    1. How do you make that first conversation with someone? I have read that you should just go up to people and say hi, ask them their name and what course they're on etc. but that just sounds really awkward to me. How can I overcome this?
    2. Once I have got talking to someone, how can I carry it on further? For example, how can I go to parties with them and go out with them on freshers week etc.

    Thanks in advance guys
