I have applied for Maths at univeristy and my firm offer is A*A*A at UCL . I'm having a change of heart and I don't really want to study maths at univeristy and would prefer to study chemistry, could I take a gap year and re apply to univeristy ? Would this put me at a disadvantage if I apply to study Chemistry at Oxford?

Not at all - I know a few gap year students on the course. The tutors may expect a little bit more of you at interview, however.
