Schools go from 8am to 3pm. How long are days at uni?

    Is it just until 5?

University doesn't work in the same way. There's a lot more irregular scheduling and self-directed learning, and it varies a lot between unis and which year or even which week you're in at each uni. Your best bet is to ask current students about a normal day at their particular uni.

However, its fair to say you are unlikely to have consistently scheduled contact time past 5. Evening, weekend and night shifts are required pretty sparingly.

Also, not all secondary schools have those hours.

It totally depends on your course and the university that you go to. In our first year we were in scheduled teaching from 9am (8.30 one day per week) to 2pm. Then we were in from 2-5.30pm. This was 5 days a week. Then we would sometimes have extra training/skills sessions in the half of the day when we didn't have traditional teaching, and placements etc would also be scheduled in these times.

At my uni the lecturing period starts at 9 and ends at 6 although obviously most of that time isn't used but the sessions can be anywhere between those times excluding special occasions

It is what you want it to be. Classes rarely start before 9am and rarely finish after 5pm, though there can be exceptions. You're a lot more independent at uni so you work the hours you want to except for scheduled classes of course.
