Contact lenses (at Boots)

I had my first appointment about getting contact lenses about two weeks ago now... to be honest; I found it all a bit confusing. I have another appointment this week when I think they are going to teach me how to put the lenses in, etc and then check how the new lenses they've ordered for me are. I'll have to check this when I go, but from what I've gathered this is like a trial - if these lenses suit me then I can buy them, if I don't like them then I suppose they'll give me some different ones to try?

Does anyone know how long they give you to try the lenses out for? I'm quite nervous about getting contact lenses actually; I'm very sensitive about my eyes. I bet it will take me ages to even put them on.

roughly 2 weeks worth, but you can ask for another weeks worth of dailys for free if needed

Oh and you'll get used to them pretty quickly, its all about practise!

edit: Im not with boots, but i got 2 weeks supply (they mentioned it as standard procedure anywhere you go) and came back and asked for a further 2 weeks dailies cus i was still adjusting to it... they ordered it for free.

Did you only start paying for them after 4 weeks then?

Thanks for your help, btw.

Hey truecolours...don't worry about the lenses, I recently went through my trial and found I could easily get the contact in my right eye, but not my left. If your eye gets red and you keep jabbing at your eye to put the lense in, i suggest you take a 5 minute break, so your eyes are less red. Always take a break if you find yourself getting frustrated as hell. Usually, after, you can just pop it in when you're relaxed.

Also, do you pay for every single appointment you have with Boots? Isn't that expensive. I wanna go with another company but it costs like £25 for each appointment you take with them, whther it's a check-up or consultation.

Thank you for your advice.

I know we had to pay for my first appointment, I'm not sure about the one I have this week but I imagine that'll have to be paid for as well. I hope if I need to go back for anything I won't have to pay again but I guess it'll depend on what I'm going back for exactly.

Heya,

yeah after the 4 weeks of free trials i payed.

Btw how old are you? cus you can get some form of discount if your below 18, il be 17 next month & got a test, 1 months worth of contacts and 250ml saline solution for free

When you clean your lens, try not too use tap water cus it can easily contaminate your lens... solutions cheap and prevents eye damage!

good luck with trial.

If its your first time and if you seem pretty confident about them then I guess they'll give you them for anytime up to 1-4 weeks.
They'll probly give you the daily one's, and they are so comfortable you will probably forget you've got them in after 5 minutes! They're pretty easy to deal with once you've got the hang of it, Ive had contacts since I was 13 and it only took me a few days to perfect putting them in, taking them out etc. Good luck!

Just practice with them. It becomes easier as you become accustomed to taking them in and out.

Don't worry! It took me ages to get them on! At one point, I wanted to give up. DON'T!! It takes a bit of guts to put a foreign object on your eye, and it takes some time for your body to acknowledge this foreign object. Lol, maybe it's just me!

But the truth is, it's like cycling - once you got the hang of it, you will never have trouble.

I'm sure it's not just you, I certainly feel that way about it. Hopefully I'll get used to it though.

They seriously are so comfortable, they feel a bit odd when you first have them in, but its not painful or even uncomfortable really, it just feels weird because its not normal to have something in your eye lol.

Good to know! It's certainly helping me feel less nervous.

Do they give you a set amount of time per day that you should try wearing them for?

i just got some daily ones myself . the monthly ones would pop out of my eyes occasionally and were uncomfortable but these are great (apparently dailys are thinner than monthlys). for the first day you wear them for about 4 hours, then 6, 8 and work your way up to 12 which is supposed to be the max.

Okay, thanks.

So you can't get lenses that you can wear all day?

lol reminds me of when i first tried lenses...took me forever to get them in n mascara was all down my cheeks...lovely look! its got easier though now but i still prefer good ol speks! x

The thing is, as far as I see it, it's incredibly annoying having 'normal' contact lenses, whether they be of the monthly or daily-type. You really can only wear them 12 hours a day max, any more and it can be pretty bad for your eyes. I used to wear them when I got up around 8, then out in the evening, so it could be much longer than 12 hours.

Then I got an eye infection.

Now I wear the continuous wear ones - they are expensive, but they last a month and you can wear them non-stop for up to two weeks at a time. This fits my lifestyle much better.

I had another appointment today where I was taught how to put the lenses in and out of my eye. It took me about half an hour to get the contacts in both my eyes (left one was a bit tricky). It took about the same time for me to get them both out as well. Then when I tried for the second time to put them in and out, I think I did it fairly quickly but my eyes were getting a little tired. I have to go in again tomorrow just to go over things again and then I think they'll give me some lenses to try for a week or so.

How much of a supply of contact lenses can one buy at one time?
