Swell on my neck...

Hey there.

After waking up from my nap today, I felt a little lump in the area between my throat and the chin, towards the right side, near the ear. Got a sore throat going on and off, and the back of my ear hurts when too much pressure is applied.

Do you think there's something, or just a muscle pull? (hell i'm hoping its just a pulled muscle)

It's probably a swollen lymph node. Lymph nodes become swollen when your body is fighting an infection or you are sick. If it gets unbearable sore or you have it for a prolonged amount of time (2 weeks) you may want to go see a doctor.

Sounds like you might have mumps coming.

Nix!

It could be, but it's probably not - more likely just a lymph node. Mumps gets the parotid glands, which are on your cheeks, more than the neck ones.

Sounds like swollen glands... could go and get checked out by GP.

Thanks!
I'm hoping its not mumps.
But what about the fact that when I press against the bone at the back of my ear, it hurts a bit?

Well, you have lymph nodes there too, so if you poke them it might well hurt. Don't stress yourself out about them too much - if it doesn't sort itself out in a few days see a doctor.

Ok thanks.
Having mock exams next monday, so I need to cram this week. Hope it goes away so I can get out of the house to study.
Thanks for all the help and assurances

My lymph node was swollen last week on the left side of my neck just under my ear and it hurt like heck!! It's gone down now, but I did call NHS direct just to be sure, and they pretty much said what they've said here - if it's not gone down in a week or so, or it's causing you unbearable pain, see a GP.
