As much as one would like to believe that this is happening because of issues of principal i think there are a few other factors regarding self interest..

    1) For the last 10 years the DUP have led the government and in every national election they've had a net gain over Sinn Fein - Some may be questioning what the point is if they are not increasing support for independence.

    2) Brexit - Other than further separating Ireland (legally speaking that is) the Brexit vote put Sinn Fein on the right side of the divide. They may feel that an election will grant them an electoral reward.

    3) Direct rule (though the DUP can technically go into coalition with the SDLP and Alliance) means that if Brexit causes recession ect.. then they get to blame the nasty imperialists in Westminster.
