Hi, I came across a past paper question 7 on the Red Blood Cell

    http://www.respaper.com/gce/307/4029-pdf.html

Please help me with q7(d) I don't understand it...

Would red pigment leak out of a crenated blood cell if it has a high influx of sodium ions?

    Thanks

The red cell wouldn't crenate, that's when water leaves the cell, not enters it. Basically, if you stop ATP production then you stop the sodium pump from working, so you can't pump sodium out. This means that more sodium moves into the cell, which decreases water potential inside the cell, allowing water to move by osmosis from high water potential outside of the cell to a lower water potential inside the cell. This movement of water into the cell causes the cell to swell and eventually burst. That's why cyanide treated cells burst
