    Hi,

I'm from Canada and I am looking to apply to Oxbridge within a few years for a Mphil in history. I just want to ask if research experience is necessary so that I can prepare and apply for some research positions. I don't really know the situation in the UK but do most people have some sort of research experience before they apply? Is it something that is necessary, or is it something extra that will definitely give me an edge?

    Thanks!

Normally, you should have written a senior thesis during the last year of your BA, which counts as a research work. You should also send an extract of this thesis in your application. Having already done some research is definitely a plus, but most students are in this situation. So, instead of giving you an edge, I think it's more detrimental not to have one.

Thank you very much for your answer! Did you study history at Oxbridge, or something else? How competitive is it to get in compared to other programs? By the way, other than research experience, are extracurriculars (like clubs/sports) necessary?

Does anyone else have any advice? Please share, I would love to hear it!

I don't study there but I rejected two offers from them.

Oxford is obviously competitive, but as long as you have a good application (and a prospective adviser willing to supervise you), you'll have an offer.

    They don't care about extracurriculars.
