It'll vary. In my first year, we had a postbox per flat, where letters etc. could be posted.
If a parcel was being delivered, it worked as it would in a house - the postman rang our doorbell, and, if nobody answered, took the parcel away for re-delivery/collection.
This year, we again have a postbox for each flat, but there is also a reception which receives our parcels on our behalf, and we sign for them upon collection.

Most halls at most unis have a reception/porters' lodge place where there are mail boxes or pigeonholes for you to collect mail. Ours posts a list on the door of people who have had parcels delivered. You just go in and ask for it, show your library card as ID. It's all simple and secure.
at loughborough theres a pigeon hole for each letter of the alphabet in our head office like thing, you just pick up your post and for parcels you go to the desk and use your student id to be able to collect it.

I know that at mine (halls, but houses, if you get me) regular letters would be posted to each house, and any parcel and whatnot would be left with at the security station at the start of the little street, then you'd have to pick it up and sign for it.

As its been said, most universities have pigeon holes were you can pick up all mail, be it letters or parcels.
are people getting their post from home diverted to uni? or what?

I left mine at home and my parents just brought it all up when they came to visit. But it was mostly my monthy bank statement so I wasn't missing much.
we had a porters lodge. But I didn't like it I felt the were quite nosy looking at my post as they handed it over to me, saying things like 'looks like you have a train ticket' or nosing a postcards etc that are personal to me. i got most of my mail sent home and then sent to my uni in bulk in an envelope...I guess I was a bit paranoid of the porters lodge! Good thing I'm not there now!!!!
Most places I believe have a post room, which you can go to collect parcels, and letters are delivered to your kitchen/flat/house/pigeonhole or whatever.

^ Good point, and what about also if you order books, CD's or clothes etc from online? Where would you write the address to send it too- uni or home? And how would you when it has arrived and that you have post, without any nosy uni ppl or flatmates, taking and interecepting your post and looking through it first or hiding it?:s:
I take it that Trust is an unknown concept to students then... o well...

What about like, buying shopping online (from Tesco, for example)? Would you need to order it and then just hang around at the reception place to pick it up as soon as it comes? Or?

That depends upon your hall. In mine, it was classed as a business address and so Tesco wouldn't deliver groceries to us - annoying, but at least it meant we did some exercise during the year

Almost all of my orders have been sent to my hall address. The only time I would send something to my 'rents is if I had to send it to my billing address - which was still listed as being at home - or if I thought I'd be at home around the time that it was due to be delivered.
Again, the postal system will depend upon your hall. For us, all letters would be in pigeon holes, sorted by surname. Anything that's too big to fit in the pigeon hole, or if it looked important - train tickets, bank statements etc. - would be kept in the office, and a note would be put in the pigeon hole to tell you to collect it. Then you would have to show ID and sign the book to collect it. Another hall in our uni would just have a list of people who had parcels rather than a note in the pigeon hole, but the rest of the process was basically the same.

I had everything important posted to home, that way I didn't have to change my address at the bank etc when I moved out for second year. Then my mum forwards all of my post on to me at uni. It doesn't cost anything, provided the envolope hasn't been opened. All your parents have to do is cross the home address out, and write your new address next to it, stick it back in the post box and off it travels to you at university.

Our flat ran on the very complicated system of sticking stuff in front of the owners door if it got delivered whilst they were out... suprisingly enough, nothing ever got lost, stolen or tampered with... why would someone want to nick your post??

We could get Asda home delivery, never did, although someone in another building kept giving our address and we ended up with their food on more than one occassion
yeh im getting my folks to collect post, and my mom can put it all in oone big envelope and frank it at work for free and send it on to me... :P this will also happen with ebay, as i cant be bothered to change my billing address on it ... :P

Interesting thread... I have no idea what goes on at my uni except that you have to get parcels at reception.

I only really get junk mail, so I'll just leave everything with my home address on...

I have my own postbox in the 'Goods Inwards' area in the uni, and any big parcels will just sit on top of the post box until I collect it...
