Parking near the Uni

Hi Everyone,

My course is at the Highfield campus and as I was on holiday during accommodation acceptance time, i can't get a room. However, I only live about 30 minutes away so will commute until I get somewhere sorted to stay.

My main problem is going to be parking. Most of my lectures are pretty short but I am in 5 times a week!! If anyone could recommend a place near the Uni (i.e. a residential area) then I would be really grateful. Alternatively, if there is a cheap short stay car park nearby, I could park there?

Any help much appreciated.
There's 2 hour parking in the residential areas around the uni.

On the attached map I've marked the places where you're most likely to get a space (blue for 2 hours parking, green for the small number of spaces without time restrictions). Might have changed a bit though (this is from memory).

Stick to the south of Burgess Road - there's parking in the flowers estate but it's not worth parking there.

Alternatively if you live for enough away you might be able to get a parking permit: http://www.estates.soton.ac.uk/carparkingapplicationprocess.htm - they're not cheap (~£100 for the year) and there's no guarantee of a space. Permits to park at Avenue campus (closer to parts of highfield than some of the highfield carparks) are usually half the price, there's generally spaces and because demand is less it's more likely you'll get granted one.

There's also pay and display parking on campus - but it's not cheap either (£5 a day IIRC) and it's generally full up by 9:05am.

Having short lectures is good - we used to have 4 hour ones where the people who commuted had to ask to go and move their cars. Definitely south of Burgess road though!

Thanks so much for your help.

I have just been out and scouted out a couple of likely places.

The car park on University road splashed all over the website has about 8 spaces - so no good really!!.

Will have to brush up on my parallel parking by the looks of it though.

Thanks again to all your help.

The buses sadly are awful where i live (about 4 a day).

Special thanks to PQ for all his extra effort in highlighting maps and tracking down links for parking permits!!

Or £2.50 for 5 hours. But that machine doesn't give change! :hmmm: One opposite Salisbury avenue or road (can't remember)...
