Moatside?

lol, "getting in" to moatside makes it sound very prestigious, not the actual sack of crap it is rumored to be!

plus, i bet im put there :frown:

To start with, yes, those are student rooms above the plaque if I remember correctly, they're part of R block...could be wrong though.

So glad this thread has appeared so I can stick up for moatside. Yes, it's noisy, and yes, the rooms are very small, but...

it's the best place to live, in any college in Durham: Why?

-location - dead centre of town, there's *nothing* less than a 5 minute walk away, many things (subway, mcdonalds, three bakeries, klute, loads more) less than a minute away.

-community - there's always something going on somewhere in moatside, and you should always have someone on your corridor to talk to.

Er...that's it - there's obviously some downers to moatside too, having to walk up to the castle for food starts to be a drag when there's so many alternatives nearby, and it's far enough to get wet on the way to the undie if it's raining.

For those hoping to get single accomodation in the castle - dream on, we were told that that basically never happens in the first year. As for internet connections...P,Q and R blocks of moatside are supposed to be being renovated this summer, which should involve having net connections put in. However, if you live in S block, you'll get the same (superb/fantastic, etc) moatside experience I had.

I'll try and remember what the accomodation form for castle exactly said by the time I post next.

Any more moatside questions/worries/outright fears?

so if you pay extra for a net connection (which i thought one did), then you cant get a room in S block, because it has none?

Somebody said they would put Bailey Court as their #1 preference and Moatside as last... I'm not sure you can actually do that! I remember the form being very very short and asking whether you want to share in the 1st or 2nd and 3rd terms, whether you're loud/average/quiet, whether you'd prefer a roommate on your course, if you smoke and I think that's pretty much it! Also as I've already said in another thread (I think it was the 'University College - Information wanted' one) they won't necessarily make you share in term 2 if you've been in a single so far. I've actually never heard of anyone being forced to share but I guess in theory they could if they run out of singles (since those who have been sharing 1st term and want to move into a single are guaranteed a single; but again most people tend to stick with the doubles, maybe because the rooms are usually nicer... who knows...)

Oh and also I don't remember how the internet thing works because when I started there was no internet anywhere in Moatside or (I dont think) Owengate either... But I'd imagine if they ask you beforehand and you pay for connection then yes you will be put into the newer blocks.
Anyway, hope this helps a bit!

This is my experience also (unsurprisingly, since we're the in the same year group)...Zeit, what our year group were told is that very few rooms had a net connection at the time and those who specifically wanted a room had to e-mail the bursar personally - I don't know what they'll do this year since now the majority of the castle is networked, bailey court is and (if they've finished it) P,Q and R blocks are too. You'll just have to wait and see, I doubt that there'll be a way of guaranteeing you get a net connection though.

hehe, doubt it, can't remembering speaking to you on a level that you'd remember who I was, hehe ( I know who you are, the international student rep thread was a giveaway ) - however, feel free to guess, I was in s417.

Aw bugger, this could have been a right laugh...
Well I know you do maths but as to 417 I'm rather stuck...! C'mon gimme another clue...
Reply 27
wow, how did you know I did maths? Haven't a clue what course you're on at all! Further clues...hum, I'm one of the lot who were chucking a frisbee around on palace green...does that qualify as a clue?

Gained a nickname of "cynical *myname*" from Ted during the summer...that's gotta be a clue, albeit a vague one

Frisbee, eh? You're friends with Alex Dudley aren't you!! Muahahaha
I also know you live in Notts and that your name starts with a J but I'm still very very lost so yes maybe we really don't know each other!
Where are you in the college photo?

Theres A College Photo! Wat Like All The Years? Wow! Like A School One??????
Reply 30
Yes there's a full college photo with all of Castle including livers out and College tutors and all those important people who nobody knows but who apparently call big shots somewhere. There's also a freshers photo on the day of matriculation where nobody ever looks sober.

Thanx 4 the warning now I have a gd excuse 4 getting my hair dun. And probably sum new clothes. And nails done...and yes of course they will show in the picture. So can u buy this picture and everything?
Reply 32
Yeah you can buy it and they charge you quite a lot for it too!! The College photo was about 25 quid I think, I can't remember how much the Fresher's Photo was but I think they're still worth buying. The college photo is really nice with loads of people and usually in front of the Keep or something equally picturesque...

Very, very, accurate, I'm impressed. It's James...college or freshers photo? row 3 (counting from bottom) second on right (just above Josh) on the freshers photo. College photo...6th row, 6th on left.

Think the freshers photo was £20...my college one was £40, but then it is the vast one with the keep in the background...both easily worth twice the price, in my opinion, can never look at either without grinning like a ninny.

Sorry guys, but moatside is much uglier than in the pic! There are big grey 70s comprehensive stylee blocks behind that archway. It's really not so important where you live though, more who you live with. You can make your room whatever you want it to be, even if this is just somewhere to collapse at the end of the night! On our accomodation form we weren't asked anything about smoking/when you get up/if you like going out or not. I think you had to say whether you were veggie or not, or they might have asked us that when we registered to get meal tickets. They just had a list of houses, with a map, and asked where you wanted to live. They had a choice of single/double/triple rooms, on the bailey (fully catered) or living out (half and half) although now everyone is fully catered, but living out still gets you better kitchen facilities, and your interests. Be honest here, as you get paired up with like minded people. Put what music you like, I would have hated it if my room mate played hardcore dance, or r'n'b or pop all the time, but we had similar taste in music, and it means you have access to twice as many good CDs! (You also get to borrow lots of lovely clothes if your housemates are as cool as mine!)

Thanks AveHan for that, tis most appreciated.

Forgot to add, our college president chose to ignore everybodys preferences and put people with the same names in the same room for a joke. My housemates Amy and Amy were roomates, and 3 Camillas shared a room on the bailey!
