I'm doing an 5000 word essay on 'How does the writers present totalitarianism (dictatorship) in both novels. As I'm already using 1984 for my course work, I'm unable to use it. Could you please suggest books that feature dictatorship like Animal Farm.

    Many thanks

Hi! Not sure if you're A Level or GCSE but I'd recommend The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood for someone interested in totalitarian governments. It can get a bit weird but it's similar to the violence shown in Animal Farm, and demonstrates oppression too. Alternatively, I've heard 'The Running Man' by Steven King is very good.

One That Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a great one! It's set in a psychiatric institution where Nurse Rachet will do anything within her power to make the ward she looks after her own, even by going to extreme means to render patients' mobility and, even their state of consciousness. It's a fab read!
