An Inspector Calls Watch

    • Thread Starter

I am writing one GOOD paragraph about how Mr Birling shows responsibility in an Inspector Calls. what do i write to make it an amazing one? and if you have ever read 'A Christmas Carol, how could i link Scrooge and Mr Birling?

Here are some links between Mr Birling and Scrooge, I studied Inspector Calls at GCSE too, although I don't remember it well enough to talk about responsibility. Maybe try BBC Bitesize for some ideas, as they have a page on the topic.

-Both characters have worked their way up in the World - Mr Birling boasts about having been the Mayor, Scrooge has similarly worked his way into wealth through education. Both are very aware of their achievements and use them as justification for their bad behaviour

-However, Birling prides himself in having influential friends. Scrooge is the opposite, and has made his way by regarding friendship as a waste of time.

-Both of the men are consumed by business, which takes over their family life. Birling, although he is pleased that the party will make Sheila happy, also is happy because of his involvement with Crofts Limited, which will help his business. Similarly, Scrooge lets business and work take over his personal life, forcing his marriage to break down

-Both are selfish: Birling wants to protect himself and doesn’t believe in socialism, just like Scrooge. He does not care for his work force and fires Eva with no regret, similarly to Scrooge’s treatment of Crachit.

As for writing a good quality paragraph, use the PEE paragraph system, as well as 'zoom' and 'link'.
Zoom in on words that support your point, and remember to link back to the question for top marks. Aim for 2-3 quotes, and remember to elaborate as much as possible on your explanation without waffling too much

Best of luck! Hope this helps.
