It's nearly midnight and my dad is still out working I guess
but where could he possibly be working at this time? Don't people have families to go to?

He has his own business and is an electrical engineer and buys, repairs and re-sells equipment, he also goes out on calls for repairs for equipment in the catering industry

but he works the hours of an investment banker and I don't get it. He leaves in the morning and sometimes comes back around midnight-2am, sometimes 9 or 10pm-ish.

We have talked to him about this as we are concerned for his health, he turned 58 yesterday and doesn't need to work so much, his business has been running successfully for so many years. So he has been coming back at a regular time of 7:30pm for a few months, but now he's back at it again coming home so late?

If he owns his a business then he has a lot of responsibilities. I guess he really takes pride of his work? I'm afraid some people are like that. It's possible he has paper work to do and other admin stuff, but you should ask him yourself.
