    Hi,
I am 15 and really want to become a veterinarian. I have looked at many different courses and I know that work experience is a big part of getting in to any of them. All of the courses give you a rough idea of what they are looking for in terms of work experience but I was wondering if anyone who has gotten in to a veterinary medicine course already or is working towards it could give me their best tips and advice on what I need under my belt to have a fighting chance. Thank you so much, I appreciate your help.

Hi Charlotte, first of all I would have a read of the Research Bible as there is a wealth of information there.

At the moment I would focus on gaining husbandry experience, thinking about things like lambing, milking, stables, kennels, cattery; I guess you are doing GCSE's and have a big summer holiday coming up which is an ideal time to get work experience booked in.
If you have contacts in a vet clinic see if you can arrange to see practice with them to get an idea of the work vets do, problems they may face and how they tackle those. I would think it will be easier to arrange these placements when you are 16 (due to their insurance) but you may be lucky

As you move closer to your application I would aim to see practice with a variety of clinics, be they small animal, farm, equine, charity or specialist. That will allow you to see interesting cases to talk about in interviews as well as building knowledge of why we neuter animals, vaccination schedules etc.
