GDL application

i will soon be applying for the GDL and would ideally like to do it in london (home), so that living costs are minimised by not paying rent (which i'd have to do if studying in nottingham, oxford etc).

what i'm interested to know, is how competitive is it for certain law schools? if i apply for the GDL in london (or at least put the london schools as my first choice), is it likely that i'll get the place if i'm on course for a decent degree result?

also, i know that many firms will ask you to do the LPC at a certain law school for their customised course. if, say, i started the GDL (or were offered a place at) BPP but then got a TC offer which stated i must do my LPC at the college of law, how would that work?

You will get your place on the GDL if you put whichever London institution you want as your first choice - they don't really care about whether or not you went to a good uni and got good results, they just want your money.

If you need to go somewhere specific elsewhere for your LPC then you will just apply there when the time comes. I can't remember where I heard this so I'm not 100% certain, but I believe that if you have a TC requiring you to go to a specific provider then they will definitely give you a place.

aah, i was assuming that the GDL application was also an implicit application to the same institution to study the LPC the following year.

the reason i questioned the competition - i've heard a few people say that the college of law is an 'oxbridge' of law schools. is it harder to get into that BPP, or any of the other regional schools?

I think with the Lolndon ones provided you put them as first choice and have a 2:1 you will almost certainly gain entry - it's not an 'oxbridge' of law schools! As for the LPC, if the firm does send you to a specific location you will be guaranteed entry to that provider. It'll work out fine.

It's not, though some providers (e.g. BPP) will guarantee you a place on their LPC if you've taken their GDL - you're not obliged to take it though

Some law schools carry a plethora of Oxbridge students.

I would apply to those ones if you want to test yourself against the best.

City by any chance?

Yep. BPP London is quite Oxbridgey as well though.

Yeah both of those, Lewis.

Those clowns at the privy council decided to award the college of law degree-awarding powers. So if you do the GDL and the LPC at CoL, you'll be awarded a "LLB" - an utterly meaningless one I hasten to add, but an LLB all the same.

Something to bear in mind when choosing a GDL provider, particularly if you like letters after your name.

I'm not sure that it's even worth bearing in mind; it's an example of law school gimmickry at its worst. Also, OxILP offer the same thing if you do the GDL at Brookes before the LPC and it looks like BPP will get similar degree awarding powers very soon, so it's not unique to the CoL. To be honest I don't think people should be deceived into thinking that going to any of these places will put them at a particular advantage because it won't (unless they want to practise in Canada; but even then I'm not sure one of these LLBs would be sufficient).

It's pointless moaning about all this LLB lark. I'm sure chambers' are knowledgeable enough to distinguish between a three year law graduate, and a GDL grad.

thanks to everyone for the advice.

that's one less thing to worry about - with final year work for my course, vac scheme AND tc applications and **** loads of ec stuff, it's a good thing that it's relatively easy to secure a place somewhere.

so have final year law undergraduates with (or awaiting) success secured a place at a law school for a year's time?

not yet, applications open sometime soon... it's on my list of things to do.

Hi,
I am an IT graduate and i hsve been working here for the last six years i did my degree from overseas and got the certificate of acadamic stading from the law society, i am intrested in applying for the full time GDL course and can only apply in london as i dont have an option to leave london,
I was going through the law cabs application and was wondring how to fill in the application to be granted a place in GDL in BPP or any other.
pls help

Just fill in whatever is true in the option-selection questions, and then for the personal statement write whatever you want, or nothing. Basically if you have a 2.i (quite possibly even if you don't) and can pay the fees somehow, you won't have much of a problem...

Hahaha. The OP is intending to do the GDL and LPC. No law school or it's students is going to test him/her! I know we've had this argument before, but these are seen by the vast majority of people (recruiters, students, even the bloody tutors) as tick-box courses.

To the OP - you will have no problem getting in to whichever school you apply to, as long as you have two or more brain cells to rub together.

form is completed and sent off special delivery... the only problem i'm now realising is that i sent it to their PO box address and (according to the royalmail.com tracking page) it didn't reach them. i hope the deadline isn't msised because of this..

Reply 18

My referee sent mine just before I asked for it to go special, that was on Monday, hopefully it gets there... I put my stamped addressed envelope in so that I should get a receipt...

I sent mine Special Delivery, but with something of a hiccup as the post office couldn't find the address on the database...did anyone else have this problem?
