Probably fear if you are in a religious community or a strongly atheistic one. Generally people choose the beliefs that justify what they've already decided they want to do, which is of course short-sighted, as pointed out here:

P.H. reasons well, but he's wrong on one point ...
"Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens,
I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription,
    TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.
Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you . . .
That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him,
    AND FIND HIM" (Acts 17:22-27)

People who don't really want The Truth will grab hold of anything but ...
"Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then?
Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born,
and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.
Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this,
he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them,
I find in him no fault at all." (John 18:37-38)
