    Depends on the context, but in general contaminants are confounding variables that reduce the validity of your results. The contaminants may produce chemicals that interfere with whatever you're trying to do with the culture, they may kill your culture chemically, they may phagocytose your culture (very rare), and they'll compete for nutrients and space.
