i am currently living in student halls in Sheffield and study at Sheffield Hallam and i live in a flat with 8 others and they make one of the others feel uncomfortable when using the kitchen as they sit there whispering and laughing and they make them so uncomfortable that they have stopped using the kitchen and want to move out. I want to say something but I don't want to make it worse for the person.:ashamed2:

That sounds tough. I've never understood why people would go to live in halls if they were just going to be mean and not try to get along with everybody. Hopefully those people will grow up sooner rather than later.

As for you, I would speak to the person who's feeling uncomfortable first. Let them know you're there for them and that you don't condone the behaviour that your other flatmates are showing to them - it's not fair to make somebody that uncomfortable in the place that they live! Let them know you're there to support them and that you care about them.

If you're willing to say something about it to the flatmates who are being unkind, let them know and see if they would rather you kept quiet or said anything. If any of the unkind flatmates seem more reasonable than others, maybe let them know that you think they're being unfair?

I had similar experiences in halls, and I know that it can mean a lot to one person who feels uncomfortable in the flat to have at least one person's support. Even if it's just a "hope you're okay", or "fancy going for a couple of drinks" it can really help them to feel safer and more at home!
