My university has a strict policy regarding attendance for international students... you can only leave for serious problems and you have to provide supporting evidence.
I need to attend my sister's wedding back home, so I'm going to miss a few classes. Do you think I should tell them the real reason or come up with a different issue?

I think your sisters wedding is very important, so I don't think they can restrict you from going to her wedding. I would tell the truth because you can prove that your sister is going to get married. But if you come up with another reason, you have to come up with false evidence.
