PCOS. Help please- blood test result.

Hi All,

I got my blood test result today and I have been informed that the doctor has put a note on the system saying that my blood test is ok. I am still waiting for a scan appointment. Does this mean I'm ok and not suffering from PCOS or will I have to wait until the scan for definite result? I’m really worried about this.

Any help will be great.

Thanks.

My sister was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago and it was only diagnosed by the scan she had. I think that her testosterone levels in her blood were slightly above average but the diagnosis was only given to her after her scan.

PCOS is quite serious but it can easily be controlled by medication so if you are diagnosed with it try not to worry too much. It is a really common syndrome and a lot is known about it so there is lots of information and help available.

Hope it all goes well for you xx

Well, it depends which blood tests they've done.

When I went to the doctors last year, they did some blood tests (no idea which) which came back all fine, despite my GP saying she would be VERY surprised if they did, yet I've had a PCOS diagnosis for over 5 years.

Try not to worry, it's a frustrating to live with, but it's managable. I don't think it's that serious. There is a larger (but still small) risk of endometrial cancer if you don't have semi-regular periods, but that can easily be solved with medication that induces periods. Some people also have infertility problems from not ovulating. Losing weight supposedly helps trigger ovulation again, and if not, there's various ways they can induce it.

Yup, same happened with me - good luck with it all.

Did anyone find it interfered with their studies?

Only insofar as my acne made me miserable and I'd waste time feeling unhappy. That said I did very well through school when my acne was at its worst so hey!

I wouldn't have said so. Other than totally unpredicatle periods which make you rather paranoid so you have to carry pads/tampons all the time in your school bag. I don't see why it should really, especially if it's been diagnosed and is under control.

My blood test showed 'possible PCOS', which was confirmed with a scan.
On a random note, sorry, am I the only one who keeps reading this "PCSO"? :p:

PCOS can be diagnosed from a number of things, one of which is a blood test and one of which is an ultrasound - there are a couple of other diagnostic criteria based on history/examination. Either blood tests or ultrasound can actually be negative even if you do have PCOS - a diagnosis can be made on history alone, though without ultrasound evidence it would be a bit shaky. So basically, you should still go for your scan and any other investigations.
I was annoyed about my test. The scan showed cysts, lots of them, but the blood test came back negative. Then the doctor retired and my periods are awful but I haven't seen anyone else yet.

Make sure you get to the bottom of it!

Pain is not one of the common presentations of PCOS. Weight gain, irregular/absent periods, excess hair growth, greasy hair/skin are. Not pain. So if you've had a negative blood test and ultrasound, it's pretty unlikely you have it. Something else could be wrong, but if all the tests have been negative, it's hard to guess what it is...

Mine was diagnosed by a blood test but confirmed by a scan.

I don't experience pain regularly and it doesn't affect my uni work. The main issues seem to be acne (but I've suffered since I was 10 with that so hardly a new thing), hirsutism (controlled by my lovely laser machine  ) and weight gain despite eating well (but I've been told by doctors that that's the fault of the pill Dianette as it can increase your appetite and make you more predisposed to weight gain - PCOS by itself also makes you gain weight more easily).

However, these are all controllable and on the whole I have a pretty happy and stress-free life

Pain in one side? Appendicitis? Though I'd imagine that if it was that you'd know :s-smilie: And I'm not a doctor so...

Well, I had a blood test for this 2 months ago but they lost half of my results, found out I was anaemic, but nothing about PCOS so I went for another one on Friday last week and I have my scan on Friday this week. The thing is I think it's rubbishas although I have horrendous acne and have had for MANY years (I'm on dianette (appetite gone down!!) and various other things for that- creams, washed and antibiotics prescribed by my dermatologist), I'm not hairy at all, I've just lost a stone in weight and my hair only gets oily if I don't wash it!!

I'd say go for the scan too.

Annoyingly different people suffer from different aspects of PCOS and to different levels of severity, which makes it very difficult to diagnose...
I was 'diagnosed' with PCOS last year, despite having no tests carried out. I was prescribed Dianette (pill) which induced regular periods. However, I went for a second opinion at the same clinic and still I was not offered any examinations because the doctor said that it will not matter until I wanted to conceive. The 'clear' symptons I have is the absence of periods. No unusual amount of acne or facial hair; nor overweight.

What should I do? Just wait til I want babies or..??

Was diagnosed with PCOS only after having an ultrasound. When I had the blood test, my doctors just dismissed me because the results came back normal- even though I had other symptoms of it i.e. hirsutism, weight gain, no periods.

I only had it diagnosed when I went to another doctor.

I have such problems with my weight, and although everyone tells me the other symptoms would go if I lost weight, it's SO difficult!
