Hi. I appeared for the IAL M1 exam this January. It was all good but there's one thing which has been worrying me: I can't remember whether I included units along with all my answers in the end. My question is - do units matter? Does Edexcel penalise missing units? Because, in their mark schemes they usually place the units in parentheses beside the answer. What do the parentheses mean? Thanks!

You won't lose any marks unless the question specifically asked you to include units (this is very unusual in Edexcel). Something in parentheses in a mark scheme means that it is not required to get the mark.

Also I gotta ask. How to understand whether they're specifically asking for the units? Something like "Find, in kilograms", or something?

"Calculate the magnitude of the impulse exerted by Q on P, giving the units of your answer."

They don't matter as such most of the time, but its generally a good idea to be in the habit of using them anyway. You'll never get penalised for using them
