It doesnt matter.

Unless you're sending and receiving real time data to/fro CER or GCHQ then it doesnt matter. If the speed was "dial up" would you withdraw you offer to study at IC

It's more than you'll need.

Bear in mind they block/monitor certain ports....

It'll probably be 10mbps, as that's the speed of the ethernet cables to the rooms. Don't expect to be doing lots of p2p downloading on them though. There's also a 5gb a day bandwidth limit, which if you go over gets you banned for a day (then a week for the second offense, and forever for a third.. and it goes on your record). Of course there's a way around the limits  But it's unlikely you'll need it.
Why dont you just buy your own broadband network card from Vodafone? That way you dont have to use the uni's network, and therefore you cannot be detected if you want to d/l music...or other stuff.

Which ports are blocked? I might need to VNC back home now and again, so I'll have to change the forwarding if necessary.

I don't know the exact ones, the ones that are used to certain activites that the college would frown upon.
Like? I really want to know.. Their main concern is excessive bandwidth usage right?
Um, porn? Just a guess though :p:

i dont think porn is a port

I think i heard somewhere port 21 is blocked (ftp)
Hahaha oh. *feels stupid* I live in a university in Singapore and they censor virtually everything... even sites with the word "gay" in them. So I figured it would be similar in Imperial :p:

I'm pretty sure it states that viewing pornographic material is against the rules but to be honest there are thousands of horny teenagers living in halls, they're hardly going to be out to get them all.
If we use the internet in the halls, are our IP addresses shared or unique?

unique.

If theres anyone in the halls right now could you do a speedtest at www.speedtest.net . Also if you use the internet in the libraries etc, are there any limits? do u have to login with your imperial user name/pass to have access to the internet in the library?
ok thanks ashy...

Yes, you have to login to use the internet in the library, and to use Wifi on campus.

You have to log in with your login/password to access library computers, i'd assume the 5GB a day still aplies - to be honest, how much do you plan to be downloading?
