He's the president and this is is flagship policy, rightly or not, he's in charge of this.

Brilliant examples of course, both being built over 70 years ago...
America hasn't undertaken a lot of public works projects lately. Our interstate highway system, began by Eisenhower I think, after WWII, and maybe the Tennessee Valley Authority projects might be the last and I'm not sure how they measure up. The highway system projects Wasn't officially completed until the 70's so it might be kind of hard to compute but, ahead of schedule and under budget are hallmarks of American labor.

The government is likely to win, and employment rate should go up.

But doesn't change the fact it's still Americans, not Mexicans, paying for the wall.

It's true that perhaps this is a scare tactic instead of "I'm going to make Mexicans chip in but taxing only Americans!" but in that case 20% isn't enough.

Mexicans can be exported to Canada and imported into the US. No tariff, slight price increase with the Canadian middle man, unlikely to decrease trade volumes.

If that loophole's closed, 20% may still not do much - the US dollar has been rising and the peso has been dropping. Not unlikely at all for the peso to drop 20% against the dollar. In this case, the government wins, Mexico doesn't sell less, and Americans don't pay more.

Another likely scenario is if Mexican products become too expensive, another developing country like China wins. Trump can't slap a tariff on all countries with a trade surplus against the US - there are only like 7 countries, leading with Hong Kong, with a trade deficit against the US.

Factories moving from Mexico to the US is not another win - sooner or later Americans will be faced with unbearable inflation if everything's produced in the US.
And Mexico loses...ergo it did what it was supposed to do.

I have never been the biggest fan of Donald Trump but I did far prefer him to Hillary, while we still disagree on a few things the more I have been reading up on his manifesto and problems with the border the more I have felt that the wall is a better idea, do some reasearch for yourself.

Only if you are very shortsighted. Mexico will introduce its own tariffs and other countries soith of the border will probably do likewise. Nobody wins in a trade war.

I like how you tagged that onto what Toy gun wrote. It made me lol.

And it benefits the US how?

If Mexico collapses, which country do you think will suffer? Guatemala?

I think the US should adopt Mexico's policies regarding illegal immigration, vastly more draconian than their own.

That way they could introduce harsh punishment for illegals, but get zero criticism from the left.

    Win win.
