Gambia has featured in the news lately and everyone refers to the events in 'the' Gambia, the entire media world is at it. My understanding is that we use 'the' as a prefix to a region or province but never to a country (hence 'the' Crimea or 'the' Algarve, 'the' Ukraine as a former USSR province has now become Ukraine in its own right and most of the same media have updated on that), we don't refer to 'the' Gabon or Ghana, what makes Gambia (see, it doesn't even hurt...) different in that respect?
