During my time on this site I've noticed that aquantances from work want to connect with me and I suspect it is more for nosyness than actually wanting to genuinely know me better. The people on there that I can say are genuinely people I could count as connecting with me for not pure nosyness but to share their lives with me I can probably count on one hand, maybe two at best. Is it just best to ignore these freind requests/make my profile harder to find until I really know these people better? i.e as freinds in real life rather than work/college aquantainces as I don't feel they are wanting to connect with me for decent reasons.

If you don't want to connect with them because that's what you think they'll do, then I'd say just ignore the request... If they ask why you haven't accepted them, you could just say that you don't really use it much for anyone outside of a close friendship group that you don't see everyday so want to keep in contact with...

Honestly I don't think the point of facebook has ever been to make meaningful connections.

I would just ignore the requests, I have had requests from people from work and family friends but I have ignored them as I don't want them to see details about me. If I don't want certain people to see posts etc then will defriend them and when I have they haven't sent a request back to refriend so they haven't noticed so no point if they not interested

If is people from work they will most likely only be doing it to be nosy and your posts could get you into trouble so is best to never have people from work as friends unless they are really close friends outside of work too

I think you're absolutely right here, particularly the end part. I just see it as too much risk of sh*t particularly if you friend a person who you thought ok but turns out anything but. I think from now on I'll keep it to those closest and my profile reasonably bland that can as you say only friend those that are friends in real life - not that I add loads of aqauintances on there anyway, but I will tend to avoid all I think.
