Hi. I am considering teaching English in China, but am worried about the costs. It costs £600 (£450 to go and £150 for visa) plus £400-£700 for flights! Does anyone have any advice on teaching abroad in general or dealing with the costs? Or any experience doing the same? I know it would be an incredible opportunity!

I taught abroad for a year in Hong Kong and you definitely do not need to pay to do this! So please do not go with this company! Most companies will pay for your flight out there or reimburse you at the end of your contract! check out Daves ESL Cafe or tefl.com!

I second Dave's ESL. Found my job in China about 12 hours later. Was one of life's great experiences.

I'd say to try and save up a bit beforehand. You want to have enough money to get home just in case it all goes belly up. I worked for a uni in a small (1 million plus) city in Shandong and loved it. Get yourself a flexible ticket that you can change the date of return. You'll still get the money back at the end but it gives you more security as well as flexibility if you want to travel for a few weeks at the end of your contract.

    Enjoy yourself!
