If you're cycling along a road and a car hits you, it doesn't matter if you're the safest cyclist in the world if you're not wearing a helmet.
Absolutely, but have you considered whether someone wearing a helmet may also be more likely to wear reflective clothing, and therefore not be hit, but someone who is less safe, with no helmet may not wear reflective clothing, and thus be hit, causing the death.

There are way too many variables missing to actually construct a suitable model to assess whether it's the helmet having a significant effect on the deaths.

There are lots of 'may's and 'if's with that argument. Yes, we cannot get an exact figure of how many lives helmets save but it would be foolish to deny that they don't have any impact.

I would be dead several times over if not for wearing a bike helmet. Not wearing one is the definition of either stupidity, ignorance or both IMO.

Maybe an impact yes, but I would be incredibly cynical about the table that you put, and say that that's a good basis for determining the figures.

Oh, I would absolutely agree about stupidity

Wearing a helmet or not doesn't always mean that you're dead or not. If you've been hit by a car, you're going to get hurt either way. A bicycle helmet is not some miracle save, it should be down to the reasonable and competent person to decide whether they want to wear a bicycle helmet or not. It's not down to the state to decide that for them, only Communists would feel otherwise.
