    I am doing: root80/1+root5

I know that I have to split the root80 into 4root5, but why is that? Why can't I leave the numerator as root80 and then rationalise from there?

You could leave it as \sqrt {80}, but it won't cancel when you multiply the denominator's conjugate, and hence it won't be in its most simple form
