    In a slightly different flavour to what has come before, I would say 'Erbarme Dich' from JS Bach's Matthew Passion. The text (below) coupled with Bach's ingenious setting makes what I and many other's believe is the saddest piece of music ever written- do listen to it even if it's not your thing and give it time to get going!

    Have mercy, my God, for the sake of my tears! See here, before you heart and eyes weep bitterly. Have mercy, my God.

    So poignant to none-believers (such as myself) as well; Bach's passions are probably the best and most heartbreaking portrayals of human pain ever created.
