Just wondered what people feel on here about Honorary Degrees. Rich and famous people being handed a degree like a leaflet who don't need it and haven't actually done any work for it. Surely a degree should be like a driving test? You can't just be given one without doing the work or completing the exams...

Even someone like Gary Neville has been given a honorary degree...wonder how the students University of Salford felt that a multi-millionaire, ex footballer now pundit turned up for a day to be handed a degree because of who he is while they were £30,000 in debt and had to work through a grueling 3 year course.

    Thoughts?

It's not an academic degree so won't help Gary when he tries to join a graduate scheme.

It raises the profile of the university.

Most of the recipients are not celebs.
