Martial Arts At Kent, Canterbury?

I do kickboxing at Kent.
Was gonna join boxing too but it's on the same days at kbox so who knows.
Tae kwon do club looks pretty good, although I've never been.

But yes, there are lots of martial arts clubs.

I remember one of the committee members of Kick-boxing during Freshers' week coming up to me and being like: "this guy looks like he'd do kick-boxing!" Bearing in mind that I'm one of the thinnest guys I know and at that time I had long straight hair running down my back - not to mention the glasses - I was a picture of nerdiness :p:

It depends on the sport. Things like badminton, gymnastics, trampolining, inline hockey etc. are all done in the sports centre's halls as you'd expect - the mountaineering club have climbing walls in there as well but they often go out to places around the UK to do their climbing stuff.

Other things like rubgy and football probably take place on the pitches, again as you'd expect.

To put it simply though, then yeh most of the clubs stuff are done at the sports centre while societies are done wherever the society decides to hold their events.

Like Faustus Fotherby said it does depend on the sport, but most of the clubs will be in the sports centre somewhere, especially martial arts clubs will be in the main hall or the sports hall (for kickboxing sessions are in main hall usually, dance studio in summer term, and gradings tend to be in small hall). And certainly for kickboxing (and I think tae kwon do), so I'd assume other clubs too, there are also tournaments where they'll travel to other places (Kent usually holds a kickboxing tournament except it wasn't on this year, and they went up to Leeds in March too), so yeah.

Thanks alot! Good to know there are tournaments and gradings too, as this was exactly what I was looking to be doing when I get to uni, finding some clubs to compete in. How often are these tournaments?

Sorry for all the questions, just a little excited now I've heard all this, as i'm a fairly competitive person. Now to decide what clubs I wanna do :p: suppose that'll have to wait til i get there in sep though.

Thanks again for all the info

Tournaments seems to depend on a lot. I only know based on kickboxing, so I'm just going to assume other clubs will be similar. In my first year of Kent there were two gradings and one main tournament (I think), which was the annual UKC tournament held at Kent.

This year there have been quite a few tournaments, although the UKC one was cancelled for funding reasons. But I think there were at least 4 fights either locally in Kent or once up in Leeds, and there was one grading this year as well (usually they're in December/March for kickboxing at least, but this year's March one was cancelled because not enough people wanted to do it).

Hi, for those people who are interested doing martial arts, i run a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(Carlson Gracie) class in Ashford. The venue we train at is 5mins away from the train station, so pretty easy to get to if you need to use public transport. Lessons on tues+thurs 8 til 10. We have a couple of students who are members of Canterbury university who attend. For those students who attend there is a reduction in training fees.
