It helps, but it's not necessary.
Women will make a big deal out of it if you're large, but that's mostly ego massaging I think.
As Foss says, you'll spend way more of your time worrying about things like g-spots than how large your bits are in the long run. Especially when you are about average anyway.

Only the first few inches of a woman's vaginal vault are sensitive anyway so what does it matter. Length is not important. Breadth... can be useful but is also not essential!

There's not a problem with your size; 5 inches is by no means tiny. It's certainly not laugh-worthy anyway. I think the girls you overhead chuckling at the idea of a 5 inch penis were probably pretty clueless.
