1) Suggest why water has a relatively high surface tension for a molecule of such low molecular mass?
2) Suggest why magnesium chloride is soluble in water despite the fact that the energy required to break up the lattice is 2494 kj mol^-1

Think about the bonding between the water molecules and why they are stronger than most other forms intermolecular bonding.
the enthalpy of hydration is nearly enough to balance the energy required to seperate the ions, so it dissolves.
